New M CON Super Cat Sparks Graydel Move

One of offshore racing’s finest gentlemen and fiercest competitors, M CON team owner and throttleman Tyler Miller currently has a Skater Powerboats 388 raceboat in production at the custom catamaran builder’s factory in Douglas, Mich. Miller’s new Super Cat-class ride, which will be powered by twin 750-hp Sterling Performance engines, will be ready in time for the American Power Boat Association Offshore Championships (May 19-22) in Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Performance Boat Center’s Myrick Coil will reprise his role as driver for the 2021 APBA National Championship-winning M CON team.

The new M CON Skater Powerboats raceboat currently is under construction for the 2022 Super Cat season.

The new build opened the door for Chris Grant, the owner/driver of the Toronto, Canada-based Super Cat-class Graydel team, to purchase M CON’s former raceboat, a 2016 model-year Skater 388 cat formerly owned by Aaron Hope of the AMH team. Prior to that, the 38-footer was owned by the late J.R. Noble of the STIHL team.

Grant also purchased the Sterling Performance engines from the Canada Homes Skater 388 that formerly ran under the Performance Boat Center banner—and earned world titles under both backers.

“I am planning on running a full season with (throttleman) Billy Moore,” Grant said. “We are looking forward to being more competitive this year with the newer boat—our MTI was a great boat mechanically but it was built in 2002 and is little heavy. One of our crew members is buying it and will run it as a pleasure boat in Canada.

“We should begin testing next month in Fort Myers (Fla.),” he added. “That’s where the boat lives.”

As for Miller, who currently is enjoying a snowmobile trip with Michael “Doc” Janssen and friends at the former offshore racer’s Saratoga Hot Springs Resort in Wyoming, he’s pumped to get behind the wheel of his new raceboat. In addition to Coil, his crew chief Jake Leckliter and crewman Craig Amptmeyer are returning to the Lake of the Ozarks-based team this season.

“Along with (Skater founder/owner) Peter Hledin and Myrick we made a few modifications to the front end of the boat that we hope will help keep us on the podium for years to come—but only testing will tell,” Miller said. “We look forward to competing against the Graydel team in our past boat that we were successful in and, quite honestly, was very hard to let go of. In fact my wife, Lindsey, was reluctant to sell until we had the new boat set up and tested, but I convinced her the new one would be the best on the planet.

“I sure hope I’m right,” he added, then laughed.

Though not part of the M CON-initiated domino effect, Texan Kenny Mungle confirmed the sale of his Gone Again Skater 388 raceboat to a buyer in Sarasota, Fla., who will campaign it in the Super Cat ranks this season. But Mungle’s former Skater is related—and not just by brand, by lineage.
