Photo Essay: Fantastic Faces Of Boyne Thunder
In the thick of his annual summer pilgrimage to poker runs around the country, Southern California-based high-performance marine insurance man Devin Wozencraft paused just long enough to send us his photo gallery from the recent 18th annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run. And when we say paused, we mean it as Wozencraft and his family are heading out today for this weekend’s LEOPA Thunderfest Poker Run on Lake Erie in Ohio.

During all of the events he participates in with his 30-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran repowered this spring with Mercury Racing 300R outboard engines, Wozencraft shoots hundreds of photos. Most of his images involve people, as he’s wise enough to leave the action shots to the likes of speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden.
“I love this event—great people at a fabulous venue—and the weather could not have been better,” he said. “Boyne Thunder was amazing.
“There were literally thousands of people lined up in the town of Charlevoix Saturday morning when the group was heading out,” he continued. “It was a spectacle. It felt like all the surrounding cities came out to support this event who were not even in the event.”

This was Wozencraft’s second Boyne Thunder trip, and in addition to seeing all of the familiar faces at the Northern Michigan event he was particularly thrilled with the calm water conditions on Lake Michigan.
“We were pretty much able to run between 85 and 90 mph everywhere—yes, on Lake Michigan,” he said. “The first year I did it, conditions were fairly rough and I spent a lot of time out of the water, which caused my vertical shaft to snap. I had to limp back on one motor on our way to the third and fourth card stops.”
