Powerboating For A Cure Turning Ten, Adding Friday Fun Run

Set for June 29-30, the Powerboating For A Cure Poker Run based in Norfolk, Va., is celebrating its tenth anniversary and adding a new element this year. In advance of Saturday’s poker run—the main event—the organizers have added a casual fun run for Friday at Bennett’s Creek Marina, approximately 45 minutes from the Sheraton Waterside Norfolk hotel host venue.

“The fun run done this way is new to us,” said Bob Veith, the event’s steering captain. “We are expecting 30 to 35 boats and about 150 people.”

Hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Powerboat Association, Powerboating For A Cure raises money for the Susan G. Komen Tidewater organization, which “saves lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer,” according its mission statement. The nonprofit organization uses its funds for education, research, screening and treatment.

In 2017, Powerboating For A Cure raised $40,400 for the Susan G. Komen organization. To date, the event has raised $340,000 for the outfit.

At present, 70 boats are registered for the run. Typically, the event is sold out several weeks before it happens.

Said Veith, “We do have a few openings left where boats have broken down and been forced to cancel, or in one case where a boat was recently sold.”
