Race World Offshore Still ‘On Track’ For Key West Worlds

During this Wednesday evening’s meeting of the Key, Fla., City Commission, Race World Offshore head Larry Bleil presented his organization’s COVID-19 mitigation strategy for the early November Key West Offshore World Championships. The topic of the meeting was pandemic mitigation plans for upcoming special events, including late October’s Fantasy Fest happening—which recently cancelled its parade and street fair according to a Tuesday story in the Key West Citizen—in light of ongoing COVID-19 concerns

Bleil read his plan aloud to the City Commissioners and Key West Mayor Teri Johnston. The plan includes time-limited closures of Greene Street on Thursday evening for the annual Speed On The Water Key West Bash benefitting Samuel’s House, which “provides shelter for women and intact families in a sober setting,” and a portion of Duval Street for Friday night’s raceboat parade and display.

“When I was done, they asked if anyone had any questions or comments,” said Bleil. “No one did. Our detailed plan was accepted and we’re preparing for an exciting event.

“We are right on track and really excited about this year’s Race World Offshore Championships,” he said. “I have some sponsorship news I can’t release just yet, but it’s really, really cool.”

In 2019, Race World Offshore produced its first Key West World Championships. The event was cancelled last year in light of pandemic concerns and as a result the organization was granted a one-year extension to its five-year contract with the City of Key West to produce the event.

“While RWO encourages vaccinations, we ask everyone involved to support our mitigation plan,” a post on the organization’s website read. “See you at the races for an exciting Offshore World Championship event.”
