Scenes From The Fourth Annual Munyan Run

What do you call small go-fast boating events before—or even within or immediately after—large go-fast boating events? Micro events.

That’s what we’re going with at least.

Today’s Munyan Run out of Sarasota, Fla., offers a fine example of a micro event. Four years ago in advance of the annual Joey Gratton Memorial New Year’s Day Fun Run, Bill Munyan—a well-known member of Florida’s high-performance boating community—and his son, Jack, New Jersey’s Chris LaMorte and a few others were looking for a little extended fun on the water.

“We were all in town for the New Year’s Day run, which is short, and some of us with the bigger boats wanted a bit of a longer run,” said LaMorte. “So Bill Munyan said, ‘Let’s to go Hula Bay and get lobster sushi rolls.’”

Coined the Munyan Run, the first couple of happenings attracted 10 to 15 boats. Last year, the run pulled in 20 boats. This time around, some 30 boats made the trek for from Sarasota to Tampa, the home of the waterfront Hula Bay Club restaurant.

“This year, Grant and Kellie Bruggemann ran with Bill and Jack Munyan,” said LaMorte. “Devin Wozencraft did it in his 30-foot Skater catamaran, and Greg Harris and Yvonne Aleman did it in their MTI 340X.

“We had a fun ride across Tampa Bay,” he added. “Conditions were great.”
