DCB Delivers Third M37R Widebody To Professional Trophy Truck Driver

The third DCB Performance Boats M37R Widebody catamaran was delivered this week, and the owner—a first-time DCB customer and decorated off-road racer—can’t wait to learn all the ins and outs of his latest high-performance machine. And learn it Bryce Menzies is sure to do, as the Las Vegas-based professional Trophy Truck driver and owner of Menzies Motorsports LLC has never met a vehicle he didn’t enjoy driving and attempting to push to its performance potential.

Menzies, who is a three-time Baja 500 winner, a SCORE International Series Champion, a two-time Mint 400 winner and, most recently, the 2020 Toyo Tires Desert Invitational winner, said he was in awe of the 37-foot full-tunnel catamaran that is powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R engines on STR X-Act brackets and features a striking Phase III gelcoat scheme with a full 100-percent cap and a cement gray base plus black, red and white accents.

“(Tuesday) was the first day I’d seen the boat, the first day I’d sat in the boat and the first day I drove it—and all I can say is that it’s unreal,” said Menzies, who added that he reached out to several catamaran manufacturers once he decided to buy an outboard-powered boat and opted for the DCB after finding out the El Cajon, Calif., company was building its first true-tunnel model. “The level of detail involved is incredible. You could look at the boat from the outside and think that’s a bad-ass boat, but once you get in it and see how well everything is finished, it’s even more impressive.

“It was about a year in the making, but I can see why these boats take such a long time to build,” he continued after taking delivery of the M37R in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., from DCB’s Tony Chiaramonte. “It was crazy to see it go from a design in my mind to paper to pictures and, finally, to in person. Seeing it up close is pretty unreal. I love how it turned out—it’s better than expected.”

Although this is the Red Bull-sponsored driver’s first performance boat, he has owned wakeboard boats before and his father, Steve Menzies, used to race a 24-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran in the early to mid-1990s when the 31-year-old Bryce was a kid.

“Once I saw the DCB finish work and Tony told me they were doing a full tunnel—that was important to me because I plan on using the boat in the ocean—I was all in,” Menzies said. “I like that they’re a West Coast-based brand; I’m a West Coast guy obviously and I plan to base the boat out of Lake Havasu. I’m new to the go-fast boating world, but I’m looking to get more involved in the whole scene and do a lot of the big poker runs from Key West to Lake of the Ozarks.

“So far, the team at DCB has been amazing to work with,” he continued. “Everything they’ve said they were going to do has come to life as well or better than anticipated. What’s even cooler is that they’ve treated me like family. I already feel like I’m part of the DCB team and I’m sure with more support from Tony, Jeff (Johnston) and the rest of the DCB crew, that bond is only going to get stronger.”

Performance wise, Menzies was pretty blown away after the first day of driving the boat in what he called some rather rough wind-whipped conditions for Lake Havasu.

“For just twin 450-hp engines, I can’t believe how fast the boat gets up to speed,” he said. “It was super windy out there and the boat handled it all with ease. Tony and I were cruising at 110 mph in 3-foot white caps and the boat was unfazed. A lot of the feeling in the boat and how it performs at speed correlated to how my trophy trucks feel. The boat felt like it was dancing on the water, which is how the off-road trucks often feel. It was kind of mind-blowing how well the boat handles rough water.

“At one point, at 80 mph, Tony looked over at me and told me to hold on,” he added. “He turned the boat close to 180 degrees and the boat just hooked up and carved the turn with ease. I’m very impressed with the handling. I’m looking forward to learning how to drive the boat. I plan on taking baby steps with it, that’s for sure.”

In the meantime, Menzies, who in 2016 made history by jumping his off-road truck 379.4 feet over a New Mexico ghost town to set a truck distance record, is going to enjoy his 2021 M37R Widebody cat, which includes a 100-percent Alcantara interior package with CNC stitching, a custom SeaDek entry kit and locker liners, a custom carpet kit, a custom Isotta XR steering wheel, a Garmin 22-inch GPS monitor, twin Mercury VesselView 9 touchscreen displays and a full JL Audio/Fusion Stage III stereo system, with his wife, Ashley, and his father, Steve, on Lake Havasu over the next few months before setting out for a fun summer of events planned around his racing, of course.

“I usually have about 10 to 12 races so I’m going to fit in as much boating as I can around that,” said Menzies, who opted for a triple-axle MYCO painted trailer with drive guard, upgraded front courtesy ladder, LED loading package, LED undercarriage lighting and LED running light package done by Adrenaline Trailers in Lake Havasu City. “I’ve always loved the boating world and I can’t wait to see what my dad thinks when he comes out and takes a ride in the boat after the New Year. It’s been more than 20 years since he’s been in a fast boat—I have a feeling he’s going to be as blown away as I am.”
