Solomons Grand Prix Cancelled

No one wanted the 2021 Solomons Grand Prix in Maryland to happen more than local race director Mike Yowaiski. A former offshore racer—at least for now—Yowaiski had been looking forward to helping bring an Offshore Powerboat Association event to his home-water since the last Solomons event in 2014.

With today’s cancellation of the Solomons Grand Prix, there are now five races in the Offshore Powerboat Association Northeast Championship Series. Photo from the 2021 Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix by Tim Sharkey copyright Sharkey Images.

But early today Yowaiski announced the official cancellation of the August 27-29 race in a post on his Facebook page.

“Calvert County hasn’t been cooperating and I’ve been getting mixed stories,” said Yowaiski, who just came off his announcer gig last weekend at Tiki Lee’s Dock Bar Poker Run, kilometer runs and top-speed shootout in Sparrows Point, Md, during a telephone interview this afternoon. “It’s a month away so I had to make a decision, which is fine. We’re already going to have a very busy fall with the OPA races in Morehead City (N.C), Fort Myers Beach (Fla.) and Englewood Beach (Fla.)”

The Solomons Grand Prix was to be the fourth event in the six-contest Offshore Powerboat Association Northeast Championship Series, which began with the Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix in New Jersey last month. Next weekend’s Northeast Championship Series event will be in Eastlake, Ohio.

Yowaiski said that he does not plan to try to organize another Solomons race.

“I might be working on another race site,” he said, though he declined to elaborate.
