Taking Stock Of Super Stock

For even the most casual offshore powerboat racing fan, it’s hard to see this season as anything but a deep crater for Class 1.The untimely late-season exit of the Miss GEICO team all but assured its final demise, at least stateside. And to a lesser extent with the exception of the ultra-consistent M CON team and fledgling Chariots of Fire outfit, the Supercat class hasn’t fared much better. There are mitigating circumstances, of course—the effects of the pandemic on international travel chief among them—but the fact remains that for Class 1 and Supercat the 2021 season has been disastrous.

The bright spot, at least for catamaran fans, has been the Super Stock class with an average of nine boats at each of the eight races in the American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series. The series finishes up this weekend in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

At present, 11 Super Stock teams—CR Racing, CMR Roofing and Construction, Deep V Cats/Offshore Outlaw, DoubleEdge Motorsports/CoCo’s Monkey, Jackhammer, LPC Racing, Paint Factory Racing, Performance Boat Center, Phase 5, Team Allen Lawncare and Landscaping and Wicked Powerboats—are registered to compete on the 7-1/2-mile, turn-filled course.

And according to Super Stock-class representative Ryan Beckley of the DoubleEdge Motorsports team, the FJ Propeller and YourStorageUnits also will be in the mix, which barring last-minute drop-outs and mechanical issues 13 Super Stock cats will take the green flag Saturday afternoon in Fort Myers Beach.

Better still is that the battle for the 2021 APBA Super Stock National Championship has come down to a pair of teams—the CMR Roofing and Construction cockpit duo of Shaun Torrente and Eric Belisle and Performance Boat Center’s Myrick Coil and Rusty Williams. Performance Boat Center leads the series with 584 point, followed by CMR Roofing and Construction with 580 points, CR Racing with 530 points and FJ Propeller with 442 points.

Like Performance Boat Center, CMR controls its own destiny this Saturday in Fort Myers Beach.

“We beat Performance Boat Center, we win,” said Torrente. “And vice-versa. All they had to do was beat us once in the last four races and we would need help. But they didn’t.”

Performance Boat Center’s Coil said that while the team obviously would have preferred a bigger points-lead coming into Roar Fort Myers Beach everyone involved is pleased with their current position.

“We wanted a bigger lead, but it’s still good that we control our own destiny,” he explained. “If we just win, we have nothing to worry about.”

CR Racing comes into Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach third in the Super Stock-class points.
