Vibrant New LSB Raceboat Ready For APBA Offshore Circuit Season-Opener

The story of this weekend’s Thunder On Cocoa Beach event—the first race of the 2021 American Power Boat Offshore National Championship Series—has yet to unfold, but the tale of the new LSB/Hurricane of Awesomeness 29-foot Extreme raceboat has been unfolding for almost a year-and-a-half. It began with veteran offshore racer and multi-time world and national champion Brit Lilly acquiring the tooling for the boat thanks to Steve Miklos, his friend and fellow single-engine V-bottom racer, in early 2020.

With a little help from his friends, Lilly built the boat himself at the Lilly Sportboats shop in Arnold, Md. After completing the 29-footer’s paintjob about a month ago, he began the rigging process.

The boat arrived at the Florida race venue on Wednesday.

“We completed final assembly on Monday night,” said Lilly. “We ran it on Tuesday and then left for Florida.”

Lilly and his longtime throttleman Kevin Smith will run the new boat in the Stock V class. They also plan to run the team’s older LSB/Hurricane of Awesomeness Extreme in the Mod V ranks.

“The new boat ran awesome,” said Lilly. “With our first set of propellers, it ran in the mid-90s. Once we have more time for setup, it’ll be able to do a lot more.”

Lilly and Smith will run their new raceboat in the Stock V class.
