Fort Myers Offshore Wraps Up 2018/2019 Season With Cayo Costa Fun Run

With yesterday’s run to Cayo Costa State Park Beach, Fort Myers Offshore finished its 2018/2019 season on what Southwest Florida-based, nonprofit scholarship fundraising club board member Tim Hill described as a “picture-perfect day.” The eighth happening of the FMO season, the ever-popular fun run and cookout attracted an event-record, 37-boat mix of catamarans, V-bottom sportboats and catamarans.

“After a very windy week, the winds died down for a picture-perfect day,” said Hill. “Fort Myers Offshore has been very fortunate this year with only one run having less than favorable sea and weather conditions.”

Hill and his wife, Cyndee, paced the fleet in their Sunsation center console. The route took the fleet north through the Intracoastal Waterway past Sanibel Island, Captiva Island and Cabbage Key.

“This is event is everybody’s absolute favorite—there’s no buffet lines, no waiting for food and no slow service, just great times with like-minded boaters,” said Hill. “The weather and tides this year allowed us to beach up on both sides of the sand bar which made it perfect for people to leisurely walk around, see the boats and meet new friends. While most people bring sandwiches and snacks, some bring grills and prepare burgers, brats, steaks and are very gracious to share with others.”

Per FMO tradition, its Canada-based Nor-Tech powerboat owners held their season-ending “Nor-Can” party last night.

While the 2018/2019 FMO season as originally scheduled is complete, Hill said the club may add one more event.

“With a lot of requests for an overnight run, which was not on the schedule this year, I am looking at adding an impromptu run through the Florida Keys on the weekend of either April 12 or April 26,” he said “There is currently a pool on the FMO Facebook page to see what dates work best for everyone.”
