Lil’ Jet MTI 340X In Paint At Stephen Miles Design

With the well-publicized build of Jet, a 46-foot Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats catamaran that will debut next month at the Miami International Boat Show, most go-fast powerboat fans probably don’t know that loyal Outerlimits owner Burton Kirsten of Chesterfield, Mich., has another Jet-named catamaran build in progress. Dubbed Lil’ Jet, the boat is an MTI 340X sport cat that will be powered by Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engines and currently is being painted at Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky.

When complete, the Lil’ Jet MTI 340X sport catamaran will be the little sister to Jet, a 46-foot Outerlimits catamaran set for a Miami International Boat Show unveiling next month (click image to enlarge).

Kirsten ordered the 34-footer for his wife, Yvette, last August during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout after the couple sold their twin Verado 400R-powered DCB Performance Boats M29 sport cat.

“I have been talking to (MTI principal) Randy Scism for years and I’ve always wanted to do a deal with him,” said Kirsten, who will keep the 340X on a lift behind his home on the shores of Lake St. Clair. “He called me one afternoon and asked me if I wanted to do a test ride, so the next day we met and ran one together. I loved it. I told my wife, ‘It’s up to you, but if you want to do this I want to do this.’ And she did.

“It’s been great doing business with Randy and MTI so far,” he added. “The boat even went to Stephen Miles four weeks early. How often does that happen?”

Slated for completion and delivery in May, the 34-foot MTI sport cat will be outfitted with a tinted windshield. Like its hull and deck, the interior of Lil’ Jet—thanks to a design also from Stephen Miles—will be matched to the interior of the Outerlimits 46-footer powered by dual-calibration Mercury Racing 1350/1100 engines.

“I have a storage building about a mile away from my home where I’ll keep big Jet and our Freightliners,” Kirsten said. “I won’t do much boating on St. Clair with that boat. We’ll use Lil’ Jet for that.”

Said Yvette Kirsten, “It’s all mine. But I am excited for both boats to be done.”
