Mercury Marine Adds Verado 400 To Supercharged Outboard Line

Not to be confused with the Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engine, the new Mercury Marine Verado 400 is the latest addition to the Verado line-up. The 400-hp supercharged outboard was unveiled today at the Miami International Boat Show at Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key.

Unlike its Mercury Racing counterpart, the Mercury Marine Verado 400 does not come with a SportMaster lower unit and is limited to a maximum operating speed of 6,800 rpm. (The Verado 400R tops out at 7,000 rpm.) According representatives of the Fond du Lac, Wis., marine engine and accessories company, who gave members of the media a sneak peek at the 2.6-liter six-cylinder outboard a couple of weeks ago at Mercury’s Lake X testing facility in Central Florida, the new offering is targeted at pleasure rather than high-performance applications.

Like its 350-hp Mercury Marine sibling, the water-cooled-supercharger-equipped 400 features Mercury-engineered digital controls, electro-hydraulic power steering for smooth operation and is compatible with the company’s Active Trim system. It also is compatible with the company’s Joystick Piloting for Outboards system “for maximum maneuverability and control, according to press material for the engine. The engine runs on 89-octane fuel and boasts Mercury’s exclusive Idle Charge battery-management and effective knock-control systems.

Mercury offers the Verado 400 in four colors: traditional Phantom Black and three shades of white—Pearl Fusion White, Cold Fusion White,
and Warm Fusion White. The engine is backed by Mercury’s standard three-year warranty and three-year corrosion warranty, and additional coverage is available for purchase.
