Mungle Planning To Field Gone Again In Offshore At The Ozarks-Cat Edition

One of domestic powerboat racing’s most engaging and beloved characters, Kenny Mungle of Seabrook, Texas, is bringing his Skater Powerboats 388 Gone Again raceboat out of retirement for Offshore At The Ozarks-Cat Edition, October 2-3, in Central Missouri. The Supercat-class 38-footer powered by recently refreshed twin Sterling Performance engines has not been seen on the offshore racecourse since 2017 during the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla.

“Right now, the way it is set up I will throttle and Christian McCauley, my sponsor and friend from the Northeast, will drive,” Mungle said. “He owns Battleboro Auto Mall in Vermont and Fairfield’s Auto Group in New Hampshire. Those names will be on the boat as will, of course, the name of my company, Kenco Bucket Trucks.

“But my back is still giving me problems—I had three back surgeries and one neck surgery last week,” he continued. “If I have back issues, I have a guy who will step in for me. I’m not naming any names, but he’s a very well-known guy. He’ll be at the Ozarks race and will take over if I need him.”

Mungle and Gone Again crew chief/rigger Andy Carracino have tested the 38-footer, which formerly ran as STIHL, three times in the past two weeks.

“The last two times we were very happy with it,” he said. “The top-speed numbers were really impressive.”

With the M-Con and SV Racing teams committed to compete at the Offshore Powerboat Association event, Mungle’s entry means the Supercat field will have no less than three boats. With several other notable Supercat-class teams including Pro Floors Racing and WHM Motorsports out for the season, however, the fleet is unlikely to grow between now and early October for the Performance Boat Center-sponsored event. And for Mungle, that doesn’t matter one bit.

“There’s a big smile on Kenny Mungle’s face right now because his old girl is back together,” he said. “And I really have to thank and give credit to Mark Waddington of Performance Boat Center for getting this event going. Without him, I don’t think there would any Supercat racing this year.”
