Nor-Tech Calls Industry To Action With Food Drive

Starting this week, Nor-Tech will be accepting donations of canned and dry goods, which in turn will be distributed to local food pantries and charitable agencies.

“There are people who are out of food already,” said Schou during a telephone interview yesterday. “People are getting laid off in our city, and it’s going to be awhile before they get their $1,200 checks from the federal government. We need to start feeding people, now.

“I’m inviting all of the other high-performance marine industry players to do the same thing, just like we did to raise money for the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian,” he continued. “They can accept food, in compliance with all social distancing standards and distribute it to their networks of charitable food providers. The most important thing is that we get this started immediately because they need food right now.”

In keeping with Center for Disease Control-issued COVID-19 safety guidelines, Nor-Tech will establish protocols for food drop-offs and distribution. The team there will create a designated drop-off space that falls within those guidelines, and will handle proper cleaning procedures of collected packaged/canned food before it is distributed.

Schou said that he also is looking for manufacturing projects his facility can take on to help medical personnel and first-responders tackle the novel coronavirus, as well as manufacture anything that can help out with the testing process.

“Testing is going to be the key to getting the country up and running again,” he said.

While Nor-Tech’s employees are still working under the company’s essential business exemption for manufacturers in the area, employees of countless other businesses—especially in the hospitality industry—haven’t been so fortunate.

“It’s very important when the time comes to get people employed again,” he said. “But until then, we need to make sure they aren’t starving.”
