Offshore Powerboat Association Inks Michigan City Venue To Five-Year Deal

With the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind.—the fifth race in the American Power Boat Association National Offshore Championship Series—scheduled for August 5-8, the Offshore Powerboat Association and local organizers have reached a deal for the New Jersey-based organization to continue producing the popular event for the next five years.

“The folks in Michigan City have been a pleasure to work with,” said Nick Smith, the vice-president of the Offshore Powerboat Association. “We’re beyond excited at the opportunity. Given our success in the Great Lakes, this contract has solidified offshore racing in the region for the fans, and the communities where we love racing.”

Set on Lake Michigan with a northward view of the Chicago skyline on a clear day, the Great Lakes Grand Prix is one of three Offshore Powerboat Association races in the Midwest this season and one of four freshwater contests on the organization’s schedule—as well as a stop on the APBA series circuit. To date, the Offshore Powerboat Association has run races in eight Great Lakes locations.

“I’m just happy to be part of these events,” said Ed “Smitty” Smith, the president of the organization. “Everyone involved transcends offshore—from the fans to the promoters. Michigan City feels like home to us. With five years added to our contract, were excited to see the evolution of the Great Lakes Grand Prix”
