Outerlimits ‘Laying Low’ with SL 50 in Miami

While Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats is bringing just one model to the 2016 Miami International Boat Show (Feb. 11-15), it’s a big one in the form of an SL 50 owned by Canadian Dave Scotto, a longtime client of the Bristol, R.I., custom high-performance powerboat builder. The 50-footer, which is powered by Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines, will be in the water at the Mercury Marine docks.

“We’re going to be laying low in Miami with one boat this year,” said Dan Kleitz, the company’s production manager. “A lot of our newer boats are freshwater boats, and their owners don’t want them even touching saltwater. We don’t really build anything less than 36 feet long, so the tents couldn’t work for us.

“So we’re just bringing the SL 50 and I’ll be with it at the Mercury docks Thursday through Monday,” he added. “Dave was nice enough to let us use it—he already ran it in saltwater during the Key West Poker Run. Of course, we’re going to fully clean and detail it for him after Miami.”

Kleitz said the Outerlimits crew is “working as hard as ever” on several builds including three all-carbon-fiber SV 50 V-bottoms—one with a new full canopy. “We’re building the canopy plug now,” he said.

Other models in various stages of construction include a second SL 41 powered by Mercury Racing 700 SCi engines (the first went to Wisconsin’s Vinnie Diorio, who has an SV 43 under construction), a triple Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engine-powered SL 41 and an SL 44.

“We’ll have lots of great projects to talk about later this year,” Kleitz said.
