Photo Gallery: Isolations And Formations In St. Pete

Last weekend’s St. Petersburg Grand Prix in Southwest Florida delivered a mixed bag of action for speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden. The six-mile Tampa Bay course wasn’t particularly rough and—at 41 boats—the overall fleet wasn’t especially large. But colorful raceboats running solo or side by side on pretty water are inherently dramatic. And, as he always does, Boden brought back the goods.

Even without any competition in its class, the 39-foot SV Racing Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats catamaran owned by Vinnie Diorio and Simon Prevost was picture-perfect in St. Pete. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix.

“The water in the morning in St. Pete was mostly flat,” Boden said. “But it got a little bumpy in the afternoon.”

Following the editorial/photo-inclusion mantra, “If you win, you’re in,” contributor Cole McGowan’s story yesterday on the P1 Offshore-produced event included images of the winners in most key classes. Still, far more fine images went unpublished and so we bring the best of them to you in this photo gallery.

Running solo or in groups, offshore raceboats are undeniably photogenic. Enjoy the slideshow above.

Next up for Boden is the Race World Offshore contest (Sept. 24-26) in Clearwater, Fla., and Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach (Fla.), which is the final contest of the six-race American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series (Oct. 7-9). From there, he’ll head to the end of the Sunshine State road to chronicle the Race World Offshore Key West World Championships (Nov. 7-14).

In the meantime, enjoy this collection of photographic gems.
