Simcoe Summer Surge Raises $54,000 For Two Charities

When it comes to weather and water conditions, members of the Performance Boat Club of Canada never know what they’re going to get in September on Ontario’s Lake Simcoe. And during last weekend’s Priestly Demolition Simcoe Surge—the nonprofit organization’s fourth event of the season—the waters were rough enough to keep many participants from making it to the lunch stop.

But that didn’t stop them from running on nearby Lake Couchiching, accessible via canal from Lake Simcoe, and raising $54,000 for the Ride For Dad charity, which supports prostate cancer treatment and research, and the Chris Lowe Memorial Trust, which was established in honor Lowe, a firefighter who once worked for the Double R Performance powerboat dealership and service center. (Lowe died suddenly in November 2017 and left behind a wife and two young children, and Double R co-owner Raymond Roberts established the trust in his name.)

“One of the most touching auction items I have never seen was a firefighter helmet with Chris’s name and number on it signed by everyone Chris worked with at the fire hall,” said Meghan Brousseau, the president of the club. “That really touched everyone and our members really went over and above with their generosity.”

Set for Sept. 15, club’s the final event of the season is the Bruce Nicolle Memorial Charity Poker Run, which benefits Children’s Wish, on Ontario’s Rice Lake.
