Crockett Rocket Returning With Bigger Power To The Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout

Measuring more than 50 feet long with fully enclosed canopies, the American Ethanol Mystic catamaran and the Factory Billet Outerlimits V-bottom continue to deliver outstanding high-speed performances at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout each year in Central Missouri. They are show-stoppers. But year in and year out, the show-stealer is a single-engine, open-cockpit 26-foot Joker V-bottom owned and piloted by engine-builder Tyler Crockett of Ruby, Mich.

On the second day of last year’s Performance Boat Center-backed event, Crocket piloted his 26-footer powered by a 3,000-plus-hp engine of his own creation to a personal-best top speed of 132 mph on three-quarter-mile course. But that wasn’t quite enough for the colorful Michigander, so he’s repowering the boat for this 37th annual event, which is set for the August 27-28.

“I am still waiting on parts and they are taking forever, but I went to a billet AJPE block with half-inch studs and billet heads,” said Crocket. “I’m shooting for 4,000 hp. The biggest wait has been for the crankshaft.

“I don’t see 140 mph being any problem,” he added.

When it comes to getting the power to the water, Crockett is planning on using the propeller he used in last year’s top-speed contest.

The foundation of Crockett’s 4,000-hp engine is this forged billet aluminum block from Alan Johnson Performance Engineering.

“It’s all in the prop,” he said. “I’m running a 29-inch-pitch, five-blade prop from BBLADES and 1.25:1 gear ratio. The old motor would go to 7,800 rpm. “The billet motor will be good to 10,000 rpm.”
