Flying High Following The Inaugural Super Cat Fest West

Thanks to the organizers behind it, the sponsors that stepped up to support it and the destination for the event’s main attraction—Pirate Cove Resort for a concert by the popular band Lit—the inaugural Super Cat Fest West rocked Needles, Calif., Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and the stretch of the Colorado River between the two towns with authority.

And, even more important and the main reason Super Cat Fest West can even exist, thanks to the boat owners who were in full force from different parts of the country with an amazing mix of high-performance catamarans from the likes of DCB Performance Boats, Eliminator Boats, MTI, Mystic Powerboats, Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats, Skater Powerboats, Victory Powerboats, Wright Performance and more. Oh yeah, and thanks to Tom Leigh for sharing some of his images from Friday’s fun run to Havasu Springs.

Although the organizers—Alvin Heathman, who founded Super Cat Fest more than 10 years ago on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, plus Ray Lee of Speedboat magazine and Todd Taylor of Joker’s Wild Productions as well as Speedboat—were faced with last-minute venue changes and gusty winds during Saturday’s dockside concert, they put together a flawless event that was enjoyed by tons of boating enthusiasts.

“For a first-year event, it was well done and well organized,” said Cherilyn Noack, the vice president of marketing for Teague Custom Marine in Valencia, Calif. “The mix of boats was good—there were some incredible boats from pretty far away, which was cool. And the concert at Pirate Cove was fun. It was laid out well and the dock staff was great. Overall Pirate Cove really ramped it up with the service and staff—they were definitely prepared for the good turnout. The Thursday night welcome party was quite a show, too. There were a lot of people on hand checking out the boats.”

Jason and Laurie Moe, the Washington-based boaters behind the radical Hurry Up 46-foot Outerlimits canopied catamaran, had a blast and were very complimentary of the Heathman, Lee and Taylor.

“Super Cat Fest West in Lake Havasu was a lot of fun in the sun!,” the Moes posted on their Facebook page. “It was a great time! Thank you from Team Hurry Up.”

Florida boaters Yvonne Aleman and Greg Harris, who are regular Super Cat Fest attendees at Lake of the Ozarks and have been to Lake Havasu several times for the Desert Storm Poker Run, which takes place this week, were impressed by the turnout and the organization.

“I think Super Cat Fest West can grow to be a solid weekend with another year under its belt,” Harris said. “Most of the people we spoke to appreciated the laid-back atmosphere and having boating destinations other than the channel or a relatively short poker run. And the beach party/concert feel was definitely a great experience.”
