Four Teams Solid For Sarasota Supercat Class

Barring any last-minute entries or exits, the Supercat class will see a minimum of four teams in the mix for this Sunday’s Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix this Sunday in Southwest.Presently committed are Billy Mauff and Jay Muller in WHM Motorsports, Tyler Miller and Myrick Coil in M CON, Lorne Leibel and John Tomlinson in Canada Homes and the new pairing of John Emmons and Jimmy McIntyre in Chariots of Fire Racing.

In the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series season-opener in Cocoa Beach, Fla., the fleet had just three boats. No Supercat teams—per a class vote—competed at the Lake Race, the second contest of the series.

“It’s should be a lot of fun,” said Muller, who throttles the 40-foot WHM Skater Powerboats cat with team/owner driver Bill Mauff. “We were on pace with our lap times in Cocoa Beach, but got pinched bad at start by a Class 1 boat coming over on the group at the start. We lost ground and we almost had a collision, but we were hopeful for a restart after SV Racing went over. That didn’t happen and they cut our race short.

“We are ready to redeem ourselves in Sarasota,” he continued. “We have won there many times and we’re ready to do it again.”

The new Chariots Of Fire Racing team will make its Supercat debut in Sarasota on Sunday.

With the exception of the 40-foot WHM raceboat, the balance of the Supercat teams running in Sarasota are using Skater 388 cats that previously ran under other banners. M CON is the former STIHL boat, while Canada Homes formerly ran as Performance Boat Center and Chariots Of Fire is the former Cleveland Construction cat.

“We are super-pumped,” said Tyler Miller of the M CON team. “Water conditions look favorable and a fourth Supercat is scheduled to be in town so things are looking up. With the pandemic working its way down the side of the boat and hopefully into our rearview mirror, I’m hopeful we can continue to add to the Supercat fleet every race from here on. We’re excited to be back in Sarasota and looking forward to a great venue and great racing.”

Running the Sterling Performance engines-powered Canada Homes raceboat, Tomlinson and Leibel took the checkered flag in Cocoa Beach and are hoping to repeat their success. Tomlinson, who co-owns TNT Custom Marine, actually started his offshore racing career with the affable Canadian in 1986 and has gone to become one of the most successful throttlemen in the sport with multiple world championships to his credit.

“It’s fun running with Lorne again,” said Tomlinson. “We’re also planning to race in Key West (Fla.) at the end of this season.”
