Muller Brothers Going Super Cat Racing

With four children of his own, multi-time Super Cat- and Super Stock-class world champion offshore racer Jay Muller of New Jersey had a good shot of at least one of his kids following him into the sport. But with 16-year-old Regan recently expressing interest in joining the Bracket 700-class ranks, 20-year-old Chase and 18-year-old Jax already established and successful in that class and 22-year-old Jason having spent four seasons in the cockpit with his dad, the 50-year-old Muller has gone four for four.

And now the family plot—no dark pun intended—thickens as Muller has repurchased a 40-foot Motion catamaran he owned and campaigned in the early 2000s with the goal of bringing Jason, Chase and Jax Muller into the Super Cat racing family this season. The plan is for the senior Muller to run the cat, which will be powered by 750-hp Sterling Performance engines, in Offshore Powerboat Association’s regional, American Power Boat Association-sanctioned races in Eastlake, Ohio, St. Clair, Mich., and Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., alongside one of his boys in the cockpit. Jason and Chase will be groomed to handle driving duties, while Jax will be dedicated to the throttleman position.

Chase and Jax Muller will run the boat in the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind., one of eight races in the 2022 American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series. They also will campaign the cat in the APBA/Union Internationale Motonautique Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla., in early November. The 40-footer, which already has backing from Curtis Sod and Speed Marine, will be called Wicked. When Muller ran it in the early 2000s, it competed under the Brioschi and Dunkin’ Donuts team banners.

“I was going to build a Super Stock boat for them to race but there is such a waiting list for those that we wouldn’t have it until 2023,” said Jay Muller. “So I bought back my old Motion cat and were are going to completely re-rig it with new Sterling engines. It has a five-step hull that was very competitive when I ran it, and I think it will be competitive with the current Super Cat fleet.”

Jay Muller will run all Super Cat-class APBA national series races, as well as the APBA/UIM World Championships, in the 40-foot WHM Motorsports Skater catamaran with team owner/driver Billy Mauff, and all Super Stock Super-class APBA national series races and the Key West worlds in the 32-foot Phase 5 Doug Wright cat with owner/driver Albert Penta.

“The boys are so pumped, as is everyone in the class—like Tyler Miller of M CON—I’ve spoken with,” Muller said. “And we need some new blood in this class.”

With his sons in the cockpit, Jay Muller’s original 40-foot Motion raceboat will join the Super Cat-class ranks this season.
