Photo Essay: Into The Blue Of Key West

For its final full day in Key West, Fla., the Florida Powerboat Club has a fun run to Woman Key in store for interested participants in its 150-plus-boat fleet. Some will join club president Stu Jones and company for the day.

Wherever they end up today, participants in the Florida Powerboat Club’s Key West Poker Run will be treated to the best weather conditions of the week. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix and the Florida Powerboat Club.

“We are going to do a repeat of yesterday because it worked out great—the location, the sea conditions and everything else was fantastic,” said Jones. “It was a fun day for everybody. We spent a couple hours with the chopper getting photos and videos, and then the group migrated out to Woman Key. The north winds created a protected anchorage along the beaches.

“There were probably 75 boats out there,” he added. “It was a festive atmosphere, for sure.”

Other poker-run participants, such as Stephen Miles of Stephen Miles Design in Owensboro, Ky., will head off on their own adventures. Miles brought his 37-foot, outboard engine-powered Outerlimits center console to the event.

Regardless of destination, all will enjoy what is reportedly the finest day of the week in the city at the end of the road.

“The weather is absolutely beautiful,” said Miles “The wind has picked up a touch, though, so it will be a little bit more sloppy on the Atlantic side today.

“I think we’re heading out to Marvin Key or Snipes Point today with our local friends,” he continued. “Gorgeous sand bars—but getting to them is not for the faint of heart and you’re not getting there with your engines still connected to your transom without following the locals.”

For Stephen Miles and company, today’s Key West adventure will require plenty of local knowledge.
