Quality Time At The Performance Boat Center Fall Fun Run

What makes the annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in late August so spectacular—five days of nonstop action starting with the Shootout On The Strip on Wednesday evening to the Shootout award presentation at Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill late Sunday afternoon—also makes it difficult to spend quality time with anyone there. Just covering the event itself, much less hanging out with the people who make it happen, is a challenge.

And that’s why I find myself this weekend in Osage Beach, Mo., the home of Performance Boat Center for the multi-brand, full-service powerboat dealership’s annual Fall Fun Run. With Brett Manire, Mark and Rachel Waddington, Myrick Coil, Rusty Williams and the rest of the Performance Boat Center crew expecting 30 boats for the two-stop Saturday event, I knew there would be plenty of time to catch up and just plain chill out with people I barely have time to nod at—and vice versa—during the Shootout.

As usual, of course, Performance Boat Center overdelivered with 50-plus boats and something of a who’s who at the Central Missouri waterway including the aforementioned PBC crew, Super Cat Fest organizers Alvin Heathman (accompanied by his favorite partner-in-crime Slug Hefner) and Nikki Sorenson, the MTI crew of Randy, Cherrell and Taylor Scism, Super Stock-class racers Loren Peters and Mike Wright, an Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats customer contingent including Burton Kirsten and Adam Seraphine and many, many others.

How Performance Boat Center transformed the Lake of the Ozarks into the undisputed epicenter of the go-fast powerboating world is a longer story—one I’ll save for the Speed On The Water digital magazine feature that will appear in the upcoming September/October issue. But this much I know: None of it would have happened without a sensational business and a nationwide customer base that is second to none.

And on that note, I need to get back them. Because this weekend, we actually have time.

Editor’s note: Look for a feature on the Performance Boat Center Fall Fun Run in the September/October issue of Speed On The Water digital magazine.
