Steve Curtis Looks Ahead

Steve Curtis isn’t just one of offshore powerboat racing’s most accomplished throttlemen—he’s among the most approachable and easygoing people in the sport. That makes him an ideal mentor for rookie drivers, which most recently included motorsports great and alternate Miss GEICO team driver Travis Pastrana, who like Curtis lost his Class 1 competition gig when the team’s sponsor pulled the plug at mid-season.

As previously reported on speedonthewater.com, Curtis now has yet another offshore racing rookie driver with a motorsports background—Carlos de Quesada of the new Huski team—to bring up to speed before the 2022 Class 1 season. Though they won’t get into the team’s 47-foot Victory catamaran before next year, they’ve had two practice sessions in de Quesada’s 50-foot Victory in advance of the Race World Offshore-produced American Power Boat Association Offshore World Championships next week in Key West, Fla.

“Carlos has been very good so far,” Curtis said. “He has always had fast boats and is a very good car racer, so he’s taken to it like a duck to water.”

That’s vintage Curtis—mellow, positive, kind and supportive, all qualities you can see in his eyes, even through the windshield of a canopied raceboat.

Said former Miss GEICO team media officer Cole McGowan, who captured the image above during one of the Huski team’s recent test sessions, “I’ve been thinking a lot during the last several months about the resilience of Steve Curtis. He always finds a way and gets something done.”
