Tiki Lee’s Shootout On The River Poker Run Almost Sold Out; Shootout And Kilo Run Registration Open

Just two months away, the inaugural Tiki Lee’s Shootout On The River in Maryland has a quite a bit of buzz surrounding it thanks to the event offering something for everyone—well that’s if you sign up in time to get in on the fun.

According to organizer David Carey, the Midnight Express owner behind the popular Tiki Lee’s Dock Bar in Sparrows Point, Md., the poker run part of the event, which takes place July 8-11, is almost sold out at approximately 100 boats. He said there are 10 spots available and that he has participants coming from as far away as Florida, Missouri and Texas.

“Our goal for the poker run is to make sure we treat everyone the way I’d like to be treated when I take my boat to an event,” Carey said. “We have some fun stops lined up for Friday’s poker run and the party that evening is going to be amazing. We have a bikini contest with a $5,000 first-place prize—any women interested looking to participate in that can register online just like the poker run and shootout competitors. We also have $15,000 in prize money and the a chance to win a 2021 Corvette from our friends at Criswell Corvette.

“We’re extremely excited about Saturday’s kilo run, which is being organized by the helpful and knowledgeable team behind the Offshore Powerboat Association,” he continued. “After talking with the OPA crew we realized an official kilo run event hasn’t been organized in so long that we’re going to put up $10,000 per class—$60,000 total—to come set the record and then make this an annual thing where people can come back to try and break a record. We may even have some more money to throw at it this year, we’ll see.”

According to an announcement made by OPA’s Ed “Smitty” Smith and Ted Ginnity of the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association, there will be a $10,000 prize per class at the event with a minimum payout of $7,000.

“The kilo hasn’t been set in many years—there are a lot of new records to be set,” Smith said. “So we’ll have the kilo runs for the spec classes, which is Stock Vee, Modified Vee, Vee Extreme, Super Stock, Super Cat and Class One. I have a feeling this is going to be a blowout event for years to come.”

Carey added that he’s just as excited for Sunday’s “run what you brung” top-speed contest on the three-quarter-mile course. Although it’s not a class-recognized event, he said the OPA racers also are welcome to compete in the Shootout On The River in front of thousands of spectators.

Several poker run participants have already signed up for the contest, including Maryland Offshore Performance Marine Center’s Andy Imhof in his canopied Showtime Skater Powerboats catamaran that has a new sponsor he plans to announce this week. Carey has reached out to many boat owners known for laying down some big speeds at other shootouts around the country in hopes they might make the trip to Maryland for the chance to win prizes and, of course, bragging rights and the opportunity to cement their name in the record books.
