Tiki Lee’s To Host Shootout On The River In Maryland

Thanks to the team at the popular Tiki Lee’s Dock Bar in Sparrows Point, Md., there’s a new top-speed shootout coming to the water in early July. Dubbed the Shootout On The River, the inaugural event has been permitted to host both a poker run and a three-quarter-mile top-speed contest sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association and the Offshore Powerboat Association.

Set to take place July 8-11 on the Chesapeake Bay’s tributary of Back River and the surrounding waterways, the event kicks off with Thursday’s registration check in followed by a boat parade starting at 5 p.m. On Friday, the poker run, which includes $15,000 in cash prizes, begins at Tiki Lee’s and heads north for five stops, including lunch at Lee’s Landing Dock Bar in Port Deposit, Md.

Then, on Saturday, the first-ever sanctioned shootout on Back River is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an awards banquet at 6 p.m., and an afterparty with a live band and a bikini contest starting at 8 p.m.

According to David Carey, the owner of Tiki Lee’s, there is going to be an exhibition air show—similar to the one that takes place at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri—featuring Brian Correll Air Shows on Friday and Saturday.

“We’re not messing around with this event—we’re going to blow this thing out of the water,” said Carey, who took delivery of a new 37-foot Midnight Express B oats center console powered by quad Mercury Racing 450R engines in December. “I’m going to put on a party like no one else has been to before because I own the facility that’s hosting it and I’m a passionate boater who knows what other boaters want out of an event like this and how they expect to be treated.

“We’ve lined up some major bands already and we’ve been talking to several race teams about participating,” he added. “Working with OPA has been helpful and several event organizers, including Ron Duggan of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, have been open to sharing ideas and best practices with me. Tiki Lee’s has been a stop for several of the events up this way, but we thought it would be fun to do our own thing. We hope this leads to bringing even more racing back to the Chesapeake.”

To promote the new event, Carey decided to run his Midnight Express in this week’s Florida Powerboat Club Miami Boat Show Poker Run and set up a booth during the event’s exhibit at Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo, Fla. He’s expecting to make quite a splash in the poker run, which started today.

Carey said registration for the poker run and shootout begins on February 26 and that proceeds from the event are going to benefit several charitable organizations. He also added that sponsorship opportunities are available and that there is a sponsor form on the website to complete for anyone interested.
