In The Lead Video Series Flashback: Tony Chiaramonte Of DCB Performance Boats

From the outside, Tony Chiaramonte, the vice president of El Cajon, Calif.-based DCB Performance Boats, appears to lead a rock-star life on the water. He’s the super-humble, ever friendly guy—the one with movie-star looks and a laidback demeanor—go-fast powerboat fans see driving hand-crafted DCB catamarans to ludicrous speeds at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Missouri ever year. Day to day, he’s the dude who puts every new DCB cat through its first test session, and the one who delivers every finished product to its first owner.

The tip of the DCB Performance Boats spear to the public, Tony Chiaramonte credits the entire DCB team for the company’s success. Click the image above to watch the video.

But what almost no one sees is what it took Chiaramonte, who grew up in El Cajon and started at the company sweeping floors and is now one of its owners, to get there—and the endless work it takes to stay there.

And that’s where “In The Lead with Tony Chiaramonte of DCB Performance Boats,” the sixth episode of the first season of the Speed On The Water documentary-style video series, comes in. But the nine-minute video doesn’t just pull back the curtain on Chiaramonte. It tells the story of one of the hardest-working, talented crews in the high-performance powerboat world.

“What makes it easy, as a team everybody wants to do the best they can from our interior department to our lamination department,” he says early in the video. “I am trying to be a leader, but these guys are really good leaders themselves.”

Included in the video are interviews with DCB general manager/part owner Paul Miller and president/part owner Jeff Johnston, extraordinary head rigger Deron Rettke, M44 Widebody catamaran owner Mauricio Vivanco and Chiaramonte’s wife, Amy. Their interviews paint a compelling picture not just of DCB’s most-public figure, but of the entire DCB family.

“I don’t think there’s a better person who represents DCB and our employees,” says Johnston in the video. “I give Tony an A-plus-plus.”

As for Chiaramonte, he’s all about the team. “We know what got us here,” he says. “I think we need to stay the course to keep it there.”
