Among Scott Sjogren’s publicly stated goals in creating a show-stopping showroom, complete with a lounge called “Club 48,” in his relatively new Shogren Performance Marine facility in McHenry, Ill., was to hold special functions in an inviting, upscale setting for his customers and their guests. That happened for the first time last night when the global Mystic Powerboats dealer hosted more than 70 members of the Northern Illinois Offshore Club for the organization’s monthly meeting.

“Everyone had a great time and said how much they loved our new place,” Sjogren said. “A long time ago, I said the future for powerboat dealers is to become boutique operations, and that’s what we’ve created here.”

To dress up the showroom, Sjogren brought two of his own collectible cars—a Ford GT and a 427 Corvette—and located them alongside a Mystic C4400 catamaran. “A lot of powerboat guys are car guys—I’m a car guy. There’s a lot of crossover in the market, so having the cars there was a value add.”

Shogren said he had “no comment” when asked if dealing in collectible automobiles or something similar outside the powerboat market was part of his future plans.

“However, I think niche businesses and big businesses are the future of our economy,” he said. “Similarly, we are selling a niche product with our Range Rover-style Mystic center console.”
