Carbon-Fiber Wright 360 And Five-Engine MTI-V 42 Make Quite The Pair

Canadian performance boater Joel Begin of Quebec isn’t looking for any sympathy, but he certainly deserves a little considering his two new matching boats were ready for delivery in August at Performance Boat Center in Osage Beach, Mo., and more than two months later the well-known powerboat enthusiast has still only seen them in pictures because of the pandemic-related border closures.

At least the pictures he’s seen, especially the ones taken by speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden at the end of August following the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, are pretty spectacular. Of course his matching boats—a new carbon-fiber constructed Wright Performance Powerboats 360 catamaran powered twin Mercury Racing 450R engines and the first five-engine MTI-V 42 luxury performance center console—are spectacular in their own right, which is why he’s eager to get his hands on them and not just hear about how well they perform from the team at Performance Boat Center. In fact, Rusty Williams of PBC ran the 42-footer up to 88 mph on the three-quarter-mile course during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout.

“I can’t wait for (U.S. President Donald) Trump to open the borders so we can go to our home in Hallandale, Fla., for Christmas and do some boating,” said Begin, who ordered both boats through Performance Boat Center, which sold him his previous two boats, a Wright 360 cat and a Sunsation Boats 40 CCX. “This is my second 360 Wright Performance. The new one has a slightly different hull and was built with carbon fiber, which improves acceleration and makes it a few mph faster, especially in rough water. The new 360 is fully loaded and as detailed—or more—than the previous one.

“For the MTI-V 42, the design and the stability of the boat due to its flat bottom patent similar to catamarans give it exceptional acceleration and stability,” he continued. “With five 450R engines, the acceleration is even more impressive and the top speed is about 5 mph faster than the quad-engine 42-footer. With Mercury CNC Cleaver propellers, I’ve been told it reaches an incredible 95 mph. The extra engine is particularly important when the boat is at full capacity.”

Begin, who said that PBC painted the 36-foot cat and that MTI painted the 42-foot center console, added that MTI’s polished finish, amenities and service are among the reasons he chose the boat.

He added that he’s looking forward to using both boats at various events around the U.S. and Canada in 2021.
