Clash Of The Titans Coming To St. Clair River Classic

Billed as the “Clash Of The Titans” by the Offshore Powerboat Association, a vintage powerboat “demonstration race” will be part of the show during the St. Clair River Classic, July 31-August 1, in St. Clair, Michigan. The Sunday morning, pre-main-event exhibition will begin with a parade lap on the marked course followed by a green flag start and several exhibition laps.

The news was announced this morning in an Offshore Powerboat Association press release.

“The field of boats will include a combination of current and past raceboats, as well as vintage historical boats from Miami’s infamous 188th street,” wrote Nick Smith, the vice-president of the organization, in the release.

The St. Clair River Classic is the fourth race in the American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series.

Entries will include several vintage Apache and Cigarette Racing Team V-bottoms as well as Sam Tamburino’s 38-foot Miami Vice Scarab built for actor and former offshore racer Don Johnson and the Endangered Species Cougar raceboat owned by Dave Wesseldyke of Michigan. Wesseldyke will pilot the boat with Steve Curtis, a multi-time offshore racing world champion currently throttling for the Class 1 Miss GEICO team and the son of the late Clive Curtis, the founder of United Kingdom-based Cougar Marine.

Throughout the weekend, the boats will be displayed in the Offshore Powerboat Association’s dry-pits area adjacent to the St. Clair Inn.

Added Smith, “The majority of boats that will be running are more than 30 years old and have historical significance in the offshore world.”
