Formula Swapping Triples For Twins With Mercury Verado 600-Powered 380 SSC
Less than a year ago, Formula Boats introduced the first triple-outboard-engine-powered version of its 380 Super Sport Crossover model, which still can be ordered with three 350-hp outboards from Mercury Marine or a trio of 400- or 450-hp outboards from Mercury Racing. Now the Decatur, Ind., powerboat company is adding a twin Mercury Marine Verado 600 V-12 outboard package to the list of power options for the versatile 38-foot sportboat. The first model is slated to begin testing in South Florida in a week-and-a-half in advance of a Bimini, Bahamas, photo shoot for the company’s catalogue.

The boat’s swim platform was redesigned to accommodate the twin naturally aspirated 600-hp outboards, which have fixed power heads and articulating lower units.

“We have great expectations for this package married to this boat with the reduced drag, outstanding lower-unit-steering maneuverability, two-speed transmission and whisper-quiet sound profile—not to mention raw power—that made the introduction of our 500 SSC such a smashing success,” said Scott Smith, Formula’s marketing manager.
Boasting an 11-foot, 6-inch beam, the 380 SSC fits between Formula’s 330/350 Crossover Bowriders and the established 400/430 SSC and All Sport Crossover models, all of which ride on a 21-degree deadrise FAS3Tech hull. The 38-foot boat also can be ordered with sterndrive engines.
