Role Reversal In The Performance Boat Center Raceboat
When the Super Stock-class Performance Boat Center cockpit duo of Myrick Coil and Rusty Williams take to the waters off Cocoa Beach, Fla., this afternoon, they’ll have more than nine other teams to contend with in their 32-foot Doug Wright raceboat. They’ll be swapping seats as Coil, who has throttled the cat since they entered the class several years ago, will be behind the wheel. Williams will handle the throttles.

The Osage Beach, Mo.-based team is the defending Super Stock champion from the 2019 American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series, which was cancelled last year in light of pandemic concerns and restrictions but begins anew today in Cocoa Beach.
“I love to drive,” said Coil, who began his offshore competition career in raceboats owned by fellow Missourian and Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Bob Morgan Memorial Hall of Fame member David Scott. “I like to put the boat where it needs to be. I feel that I’m really good at that and giving the throttleman more input to help him make the right decisions.”
Coil and Williams began practicing in their “new” roles at the Lake of the Ozarks, but they got their first taste of rough Atlantic Ocean water during yesterday’s testing session. They also got to show off the boat’s new livery featuring the team’s new sponsor, FASS Fuel Systems/Motorsports, which was announced in a story last week.
“Rusty did well,” Coil said after exiting the cockpit yesterday, then laughed. “I hope the race isn’t as rough.”
Coil may get his wish, though not completely. Yesterday’s strong sustained winds have yet to materialize, but the seas remain in the four-foot range.
The Performance Boat Center teammates are planning to stick with their new cockpit arrangement for the entire 2021 season.
“The switch wasn’t bad,” Coil said. “And now each of us can understand what the other guy has been telling him about what he’s feeling in the boat.”
